10-Day Gamejam

Won 1st Place in 'Use of Theme!'

The Purrfect Crime puts you in control of a very angry cat that, as cats do, smashes EVERYTHING! It was created with 8 colours in 10 days around the 'break' theme for Palette Jam. It's best described as a chaotic 2D action-arcade game.

My responsibilities included writing a design document while sketching and finalising the level.

Contributions

  • Designed and iterated on the game's core mechanics

  • Sketched and finalised level design

  • Wrote the team's GDD

  • Acted as producer for the team of 4, keeping everyone on track

  • Created several pieces of pixel art to lighten artists' workload

LEVEL DESIGN

The purrfect crime being a 2D game meant there wasn't much opportunity for greyboxing; I would've liked to do more iteration after playtesting found some flaws with the sketched level designs (and certain mechanics didn't make it into the final build), but the destroy-everything-as-fast-as-you-can gameplay meant players wouldn't be spending enough time in any one spot for flaws to become glaring.

GAME DESIGN

This game's GDD covered the game's premise, mechanics, and required assets - previous jams taught me the importance of making sure that everyone knows what they are doing to cut down on 'thumb twiddling' time.

If I made it today I'd try to include more visual representations of the mechanics, like doodles or similar - it's a bit of a dull read as-is. Still, the scope was manageable enough for us to get the game submitted a few hours early, which is a win in my book!
