Sporadic work - personal project

On The Other Hand is a gristly first-person horror puzzle game inspired by the likes of SAW and Resident Evil. Originally created for Indie Horror Gamejam, work has resumed years later as the game has become a personal project.

My responsibilities included designing and iterating on puzzles and level design - I also did a lot of programming. Shudder-worthy!

GAME DESIGN

The design document I created below details the various puzzles and tension-building mechanics in the game. My focus was on creating an experience that rewards players for paying attention to their environment while creating a situation where they'd be panicking and making ethically questionable decisions throughout.

A separate level design document explains the significance of the contents of each room

LEVEL DESIGN

On The Other Hand is set in a creepy underground bunker, and capturing an eerie atmosphere was important to putting players on edge despite nothing being down there to 'get' them. Lighting was an effective tool.

Long, cramped corridors let the slowly-running-out blood meter build tension, but as certain puzzles relied on players noticing environmental clues, sight lines and colour were important to the overall experience. Several iterations were explored to find the right balance, seen in the gallery and level design document below.
